Introduction - Why We Brew
Years ago I wasn't a brewer and there is a good chance that you're reading this right now, you too are not a brewer. But in an off-chance conversation one day the topic came up. A good friend of mine had spent a few years of his college life brewing up mystery beer concoctions in his fraternity house and he managed to convince me that brewing was a great hobby. Years later and after many outstanding batches of home brew, I am glad that he talked me into starting. I hope that this blog will help you catch the brewing bug too.
Getting Started
Whenever I speak with a new brewer-to-be, I often get asked, "How hard is it to brew beer?" The answer in truth is that if you can make soup, you can make beer. The basic process of introductory extract brewing is really just a matter of combining ingredients in a big pot and cooking it. This is then following by some amount of fermentation. If you can grasp dumping things into a pot and the concept of sterilization, then you are already well on your way to becoming a successful home brewer. From that point beer brewing can become as simple or complex as you want it to.
Taking the Next Step
Great quality beer is something that you can share and enjoy. It is not just a hobby that you do in your spare time, it becomes a skill that improves your life and the lives of others through experimentation and socialization. Brewing can challenge you to think creatively and diversify your tastes for finely crafted beer and wine. The brewing process connects you directly with the subtle ingredients, temperatures and processes that produce the flavors you have come to know and enjoy. It can add dept to your culinary understanding. And at the end of the day not only do you gain a sense of satisfaction from creating something great, but you also have a tall, delicious glass of beer to relax and savor.
